Canaries Running Team, Oklahoma City
Canaries Running Team has selected Brenda Grant as its outstanding mentor in recognition of her exceptional support to the organization and her mentee, Zach.
“The word outstanding doesn't even begin to touch on who Brenda Grant is as a person, a mentor, and a friend,” said Program Director Abby Prescott. “She is a teacher at Santa Fe South High School, a dedicated wife, a mother of four boys, and still finds time to not only volunteer with the Canaries Running Team but to do so superbly.”
Grant is enthusiastic about the Canaries and has recruited more coaches to join the team the past two seasons than the group has had the past six years combined. She knows when to push her running partner, Zach, to run faster and recognizes when to have an easy night and engage in conversation.
“She is a mentor not only with her time and conversation, but with her lifestyle and professionalism,” Prescott added. “Brenda Grant is an asset to the team and is unmatched in the contribution she has made not only to her mentee, but to the team as a whole this past year.”
About the Program: The Canaries is a free running team offered to youth ages 8 and older in south Oklahoma City. The team practices twice a week, competes in races, and more importantly, provides healthy relationships. Many team members struggle with food insecurity, unstable families, and lack of positive role models in their lives. The students show up for running practice every week and find a program where they are cherished, motivated and encouraged.
