Brenda SmithMiller Mentor Program, Yukon Public Schools
Miller Mentor Program of Yukon has named Brenda Smith, deputy treasurer for Yukon Public Schools, as its outstanding mentor for Oklahoma Mentor Day.
Launched in 1996, the mentoring program focuses on working with students who are struggling with self-esteem or family issues. Mentoring takes place during school hours at the student’s school.
Brenda has been matched the past two years with Destiny, a first-grader at Myers Elementary School. “Destiny has made great strides under Brenda’s caring mentorship,” said Christine Sorrels, program director. “About every other week, Brenda has the most darling Destiny stories. We laugh so hard we almost cry at the cute sayings and things she tells Brenda.”
Brenda has a heart for serving children, Christine added. She and her husband, a local pastor, have hosted several foster children in their home.
