Mentoring Dates and Activities

Aug. 1 through Nov. 30, 2016

Nearly 400 coaches have joined forces to endorse Oklahoma’s Coaches Mentoring Challenge, a statewide campaign running Aug. 1 through Nov. 30 to encourage sports fans to mentor young people in their communities. Oklahoma’s third annual Coaches’ Mentoring Challenge is spearheaded by OSU Coach Mike Gundy and OU Coach Bob Stoops in collaboration with state mentoring organizations and the Boren Mentoring Initiative.

In 2014, 3,340 Oklahomans signed up to mentor, and in 2015 some 3,821 responded to the challenge. This year, organizers hope to build on that momentum by recruiting more than 4,000 mentors for Oklahoma youths. We also hope to involve even more coaches and mentoring programs across the state. When coaches endorse the challenge, we can use their photos and names in social and hometown media to magnify the buzz about mentoring in your town and in Oklahoma. We will email you to collect new mentor numbers at the end of each month.

Jersey Daysany day from Aug. 1 – Nov. 30— Wear your favorite sports team jersey in support of the Coaches’ Mentoring Challenge, Team Oklahoma, and/or mentoring. Make a sign, pose for a picture, ID people and mentoring organization, and then send it to us for our Facebook page. You can send more than one photo during the challenge. See Leedey coaches’ example.

Team Day, Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016 This is social media “Thunderclap” Day. Our message can be shared via Thunderclap or by all sharing on FB, Twitter, and other social media. On this day, all campaign partners, including coaches, will be asked to use #CoachesMentoringChallenge and #okcoacheschallenge on social media to promote mentoring recruitment and the campaign.
