As part of National Mentoring Month, the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence and its David and Molly Boren Mentoring Initiative are sponsoring the sixth annual Oklahoma Mentor Day on Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, at the University of Oklahoma in Norman.
The goal of Oklahoma Mentor Day is to recognize outstanding mentors (one volunteer mentor per organization) from all types of youth mentoring programs around the state and to provide fun, educational activities for the honorees and their mentees to share. The event also raises awareness about the impact of mentoring in young people’s lives.
Based on the success of last year’s event at the University of Central Oklahoma – which provided opportunities for mentees to visit a college campus interact with faculty and students – we are excited to host the 2018 Oklahoma Mentor Day at the University of Oklahoma.
Each Oklahoma mentoring program listed in the Boren Mentoring Initiative website directory is encouraged to submit one outstanding mentor for recognition. We also invite each honoree’s mentee as well as key representatives from his/her mentoring program to attend. Each outstanding mentor will receive a certificate and a memento; each mentee will also receive a memento. We will take photos and provide hometown publicity for the honorees and participants from each community. As a special tribute this year, we are planning to publish a booklet with honored mentor photos and bios, which will go to press in December.
Following the Mentor Day ceremony, for those who pre-register we will have lunch, interactive activities and an optional tour.
