Frequently Asked Questions

I’m not very good with academics, so how can I be a mentor?
Mentors have other opportunities to impact a child’s life beyond academics. In addition to serving as positive adult role models, mentors serve as caring listeners, concerned friends and encouraging cheerleaders.

When and where do I mentor?
The time and place will be determined by the coordinating organization. Some programs provide time during the school day and a location on campus to meet with mentees, while others encourage mentors to meet with students during other times, such as breakfast or lunch. Contact your local mentoring organization for more information about its policies.

How long do I work with a student?
It is beneficial if a mentor can meet with a child for at least a year. In many situations, organizations try to pair a mentor and student for several years. For example, a mentor can begin working with a freshman and continue meeting with that teen until he or she graduates from high school.
