Proclamation Declaring January 2008 as Mentoring Month in Oklahoma
Whereas, mentors across Oklahoma are changing our state for the better by making a difference in a young person's life; and
Whereas, research shows that mentors help children resist peer pressure, improve school performance, stay off drugs, and make healthier choices; and
Whereas, mentors are better able to make sense of their own past, develop positive relationships with youth, and experience feelings of accomplishment; and
Whereas, the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence has launched the David & Molly Boren Mentoring Initiative to promote the growth and development of school-based mentoring throughout our state; and
Whereas, during National Mentoring Month, we encourage citizens to become mentors and recognize the many Oklahomans who dedicate their time, talents, and energy to help children develop character and integrity;
Now, therefore, I, Brad Henry, Governor of the State of Oklahoma, do hereby proclaim January 2008 as Mentoring Month in the State of Oklahoma.
