George Washington Ambassador Program Sponsors Birthday Celebration "Cake" Contest

January 5, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY – George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens, an educational partner of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, is hosting a cake-decorating contest in conjunction with George Washington's birthday.

Students in the categories of third through fifth-grade and sixth through eighth grade are invited to submit entries in the George Washington Birthday Celebration "Cake" Contest.

Each class (NOT individual students and NOT multiple classes together) is invited to create a FAKE birthday cake made out of styrofoam or other light materials (no edible or perishable materials) that reflects some element of George Washington's life. The cake can represent Washington's entire life, his presidency, his time as commander of the Continental Army or some other aspect of Washington's life. The entire cake, with all decorations, must not exceed three feet in height and three feet in width.

To enter, send up to three digital photos of your creation with a 200 word-or-less description of what the cake represents to jmcclaren@mountvernon.org by Jan. 29. Please include the teacher's name, grade level, school name, and school phone number. Entrants will receive a confirmation within 32 hours that the photos are received.

The cakes will be judged on their correct reflection of aspects of Washington and his life (50 points), creativity and artistic quality (20 points), written descriptions reflecting the confection's design (20 points) and overall impression (10 points)

The top three cakes from each category will be selected and those six cakes are to be delivered to the State Superintendent's Social Studies and Fine Arts Conference to be held Saturday, Feb. 6, at Southmoore High School, 2901 S. Santa Fe in Moore. The cakes will be on display during the conference. Each of the finalist's teachers will receive a $30 gas card to defray the cost of delivering the cake to the History Center. Cakes are to be taken home at the end of the conference-no exceptions.

Conference attendees will vote for one winner from each category. Each of those winners will receive a George Washington Birthday Party Celebration in their classroom hosted by Martha Washington (Jan McClaren) on either Feb. 23 or Feb. 25.
