Teacher Scholarships for Professional Development Giving Opportunities
In the coming years, Americans will be challenged as never before, making the demand for well-educated leaders in both public and private sectors greater than ever. The education of our future leaders begins at the doorway of our public schools, and our teachers hold the key.
Just as in any demanding profession, it is critical that teachers receive ongoing intellectual and creative stimulation to stay at the top of their game. The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence has seen what one such teacher-training program can do. The positive feedback from teachers we have sent to the Colonial Williamsburg Summer History Teaching Institute has been phenomenal. Many describe the experience as “life-changing.”
As gratifying as such words are, it serves to remind us that there are hundreds of Oklahoma teachers in the fields of math, science and language arts who also could benefit from similar learning enrichment, but lack adequate funding to participate. This is especially true at low-income, or Title 1, schools.
As part of its ongoing mission to strengthen public education, the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence has created the Teacher Scholarships for Professional Development, which will make it possible for more teachers to attend valuable continuing education programs and bring that knowledge back into their classrooms. Our goal is that, by funding teacher scholarships in identified Title 1 schools, we can improve the education of many more Oklahoma students, which in turn will develop stronger communities for the future of our state.
The Foundation for Excellence is encouraging private and corporate donors to establish teacher scholarships in their communities. Donors have the opportunity to create scholarship endowments in their name or in honor of a loved one or special teacher.
