Congratulations to the 2013 Oklahoma Mentor Day Outstanding Mentors

Justice Noma D. Gurich poses with Camp Fire Green Country's Mentor of the Year Kambria Givens and her mentees ages kindergarten through second grade.

On Jan. 16 at the State Capitol, the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence honored 35 outstanding mentors at the first Oklahoma Mentor Day. Organizations active in our Boren Mentoring Initiative network, including corporate, community, school, collegiate and faith-based groups, had selected their Mentor of the Year to be recognized. Some 200 people from across the state attended the festivities.

In the fourth floor rotunda, the day began with a networking brunch followed by the recognition ceremony in the House chamber. Kathy Taylor, former mayor of Tulsa and a foundation trustee, and Patti Mellow, foundation president, made the presentations to the honorees. Mentors and mentees of every age, gender, ethnicity and background sat at the representatives’ desks on the floor of the chamber, while guests filled the galleries.

Following the presentations, photographs and lunch, Jahruba Lambeth told stories and led interactive African drumming. Noma D. Gurich, Justice, Oklahoma Supreme Court, talked about the judiciary, the importance of education and seizing opportunities. The day culminated with an outing to Science Museum Oklahoma for mentors and mentees to enjoy together. From the positive response of attendees, Oklahoma Mentor Day was a resounding success. This celebration to honor outstanding Oklahoma mentors will become an annual event for the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence!
