The Oklahoma Media Company’s Young Readers Mentoring Program has selected volunteer Alan Hicks as its outstanding mentor for Oklahoma Mentor Day.

Company employees mentor students in Oklahoma City Public Schools, with an emphasis on learning to read, setting and achieving goals and building positive self-worth. The most important part of the program is simply being a part of their student’s life on a consistent basis.

The director of online advertising operations at The Oklahoman Media Company, Hicks has volunteered 20 years for the company’s mentor program. He is currently matched to LeSire Nafe, a third-grader at Edgemere Elementary School.

Will Gage, the Oklahoma Media Company’s marketing and events specialist said Alan has been a part of the Young Readers Mentoring Program since the early 1990’s and has since influenced the lives of countless students.

“Alan strives to grow each day whether it is in knowledge or skill,” Will said. “The Oklahoman can always count on Alan to be an outstanding ambassador in the community as he strives every day to make Oklahoma a better place to live, work and raise a family.”
