Tutor Tots, SONIC, America’s Drive-In, Oklahoma City
Becky Rickard, who retired in December as community relations manager at SONIC, is described as a “mentor to mentors.”
For nearly a decade, Rickard has led tutor recruitment for SONIC and its 22-year partnership with Wilson Elementary School in Oklahoma City.
Christi Woodworth, vice president of public relations for SONIC, says that “hundreds of children, families, teachers and administrators have been impacted by Becky’s commitment to our partnership with Wilson.
“Not only has she matched SONIC employees with students, she actively participates in the PTA and works to find additional resources for the school in any way that can be helpful,” says Woodworth.
“Becky is the heart of SONIC’s community engagement – she is the lifeblood of our culture to live out one of our core values,” Woodworth adds. “Relationships as a way of life. She bridges the gap between work and community involvement and always invites her coworkers to engage with Wilson Elementary in every way they can, from tutoring to volunteering at one of the parties we throw each year for the students.”
One doesn’t often find matches that are decades in the making, says Woodworth, adding, “Becky continues to build this relationship year after year through administrative changes and tutor coordinator changes.”
Rickard is “simply amazing,” concludes Woodworth. “She has built a legacy of volunteerism for Wilson Elementary that will continue to pay dividends for years.”
About the Program: SONIC’s Tutor Tots program is in its second decade of providing academic tutors to students at Wilson Elementary School in Oklahoma City. Approximately 50 students are tutored each year by SONIC employees. In addition to spending an hour per week with their student, Wilson tutors and other SONIC employees throw an annual holiday party for the whole school with presents, treats and visits to each classroom by Santa & Mrs. Claus. Students who are tutored by SONIC employees, along with other students with tutors, are invited to SONIC’s corporate office in May for an end of year celebration. SONIC is actively engaged in the Wilson PTA and works collaboratively with parents and school administration to support the staff, teachers, students and Wilson community.
