INTEGRIS Positive Directions Mentoring Program, Stanley Hupfeld Academy at Western Village,
Mentee: Andrew Threatt, 11 years old
“Bernard Jones, retired military, has been a mentor with the INTEGRIS Positive Directions Mentoring Program for seven years. Currently, he is matched with Andrew Threatt, a fifth-grade student.
"Andrew and Bernard love to shoot hoops after working on their math or reading assignments. Bernard comes once a week and always has a smile and a funny anecdote to share with the office staff before he picks up Andrew from class.
When you ask Bernard what he has learned from his mentee, he will tell you ‘patience.’ He will also tell you that he never thought he would be a mentor because he did not have the patience to work with kids, and that his wife was the one who talked him into signing up as a mentor. He has, however, learned the ‘power of an hour’ by working with his mentee each week.
"Thank you, Mr. Jones, for making the difference in the life of a child.”
