Bobby Droke"A&W" Asbury and Whitman Connection
Asbury United Methodist Church and Walt Whitman Elementary, Tulsa
Bobby Droke, a retired U.S. Army airborne paratrooper, has been selected as the outstanding mentor for A&W Connection, a partnership between Asbury United Methodist Church and Walt Whitman Elementary School in Tulsa. The program works to connect community members with volunteer opportunities at the school.
Asbury volunteer Barbie Page nominated Bobby in part for his unique and dedicated eight-year-long relationship with his mentee and goddaughter, Da’mireah (Miri). Bobby has been in Miri’s life since she was a baby. Together they attend local events and activities, read books and most importantly, share life experiences with one another. In addition, Bobby strives to reinforce the lessons Miri’s mom is teaching her.
“When Miri went to school, so did Bobby,” said Page. “Even when he was active duty in the military, he still came to her school to volunteer regularly. Now that he is retired, Bobby volunteers at the school every single day.”
In addition to supporting Miri, Droke has also been a positive role model to other students at Whitman.
“Every student he works with knows that Bobby is there for them and that his love for them is genuine and unconditional,” Page added. “He hopes that the students will always remember that there was ‘some guy’ who cared for them when they were young.”
“I may not be perfect, but I care,” Bobby said. “I may not be able to change the world but I can make a difference in Miri’s life and the lives of others.”
