B.I.S.O.N. Mentors has selected Celo Harrel of Leedey as its outstanding mentor of the year for recognition at Oklahoma Mentor Day. B.I.S.O.N., an acronym for “Believe in Some One Now,” serves pre-K through 12th-grade students in the Leedey Public Schools.
Celo has been paired with his mentee Kayson for three years.
“Kayson is a very sharp kiddo,” Celo said. “I see great potential with him academically, and I want to help foster and support any dreams or aspirations he has of one day attending college.”
Celo and Kayson do a lot of activities together including reading and learning how to cast a fishing rod.
“I think Celo is a great example of what mentoring is all about,” said B.I.S.O.N. Mentor Coordinator Kris Core. “Even though he works outside of Leedey at a stressful time-demanding job, Celo always makes time to show up for Kayson and is genuinely concerned about how he is doing in school.”
Celo owns his own law firm in Elk City, about 30 miles away from Leedey. Even with the long drive, Celo is committed to making time to see Kayson once a week. He even goes to Kayson’s school before work and will often eat breakfast with him in the school cafeteria.
“Celo is such a great, strong male role model for this very intelligent young man,” Core added. “I see incredible strides occurring with this match in the future.”
