Sooner Stilettos Women’s Basketball Mentoring Program, University of Oklahoma, Norman
Julia Chew, president of the Julia Chew Agency, was selected to receive the organization’s Outstanding Mentor of the Year because of the leadership role she has taken in Sooner Stilettos, including its mentoring program, as well as numerous other community endeavors.
She served as a mentor to Gabbi Ortiz, who was attending OU on a basketball scholarship from Wisconsin and had no family in the area.
Chew helped introduce her mentee to the university and local community and attended many of the student-athlete’s home and away games. Despite a severe ice storm that limited attendance, Chew attended Gabbi’s senior night ceremony, presenting her with flowers.
“Gabbi is driven to succeed,” says Chew. “I love that she would ask my advice on a class project, even though she already had it handled and carried a 4.0 GPA.”
Gabbi found in Chew a good listener and supporter.
Chew found in Gabbi a new, dear friend. “Gabbi reminded me of the pressure collegiate athletes face, both in athletics and academics,” she says. “I learned we can help younger women understand the importance of striving for excellence, not perfection.”About the Program: Sooner Stilettos Women’s Basketball Mentoring Program is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of women through the mentoring of female student-athletes as well as to supporting OU Women’s Basketball.
