Boys & Girls Club of Oklahoma County, Oklahoma City
This year’s outstanding mentor for Boys & Girls Club of Oklahoma County is Rachel Giles, a graphic designer for Advanced Printing & Marketing in Oklahoma City.
Since 2015, Giles has been a dedicated club volunteer, committing two afternoons a week to work with both elementary and middle school students. Some of her favorite activities have been conducting science projects, making Paper Mache masks and engaging in role-playing games.
“Rachel has brought an unrelenting commitment to our mission at the Club,” said LaRissa Conn, the Club’s volunteer coordinator and arts director. “She brings games, projects and most of all an open mind – all of which have moved mountains in students’ lives.”
While Giles works with many students, she made a special connection two years ago with her mentee Melvin and has become a constant source of encouragement in his life. She also helped him make the transition from elementary to middle school.
“Melvin is a student who would happily blend into the background if left to his own devices, and with Ms. Rachel’s help, he is willing to be seen,” Conn said. “He feels safer to be himself, to process his feelings with someone and to try new things. Melvin is really into science, and Ms. Rachel is always bringing projects for them to work on.”
Giles began working with Melvin during her first year as a club volunteer, and the two of them “just clicked” immediately. “Melvin feels safe with Ms. Rachel by his side,” Conn said.
