Boys & Girls Club, Nowata
A lifelong resident of Nowata, Suzanne Pruett has served the past three years as a mentor for the Boys & Girls Club of Nowata. As a young child, Pruett attended the club herself and often looked up to the staff members. This experience prompted her to become a mentor for the program, where she also serves as an AmeriCorps Vista staff member.
Now a first-year nursing student at Rogers State University, Pruett has served three years as a mentor to Sydney, 11. The duo especially enjoys doing science experiments and baking together.
“What is unique about this match is that Suzanne and Sidney are opposites, but they click really well together,” said mentoring coordinator Shelby Swalley. “Suzanne has helped her mentee open up and become more confident.”
In addition to working one on one with Sidney, Pruett is a positive role model to children in the Boys & Girls Club program and beyond, said Treasure Standeford, CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Nowata.
“Suzanne is a great influence not only to her mentees at Boys & Girls Club, but also to our community youth,” Standeford said. “She has future aspirations to be successful as a college student and as a young adult and gives her time to young people to encourage them to do the same.”
Swalley said Pruett was selected as outstanding mentor because she makes the children in the program feel loved, respected and important. “She always makes time for her mentees, and time is one of the most valuable things to our children.”
About the program: Boys and Girls Club of Nowata works with youth to develop the qualities needed to become responsible citizens and leaders through a broad range of programs in five core program areas: Character & Leadership Development; Education & Career Development; Health and Life Skills; the Arts; and Sports, Fitness and Recreation.
