Mentee: “Jane,” 12 years old
“Tonya Finley, the Tri-County Smart Start assistant coordinator, has been a compassionate mentor to several of the mentees enrolled in Passport to the Future program over six years but more recently to ‘Jane’ for almost two years.
"Since building this relationship, her mentee, who was very shy and insecure, has definitely come out of her shell. She has much more confidence in herself and feels more positive of her abilities as her Dad confirms. With Tonya’s encouragement, ‘Jane’ has participated in more school activities, had better attendance, and made better grades. In her mom’s absence, ‘Jane’ loves the ‘girlie’ touch that Tonya provides when they fix their hair or paint their nails.
"Tonya relates to the families in our program from a personal view. She is raising her two granddaughters. Also she has worked for the mentoring program for five years as the program assistant. Tonya understands every aspect of the mentoring relationship because she has lived it.”
