Junior Achievement of Oklahoma, Oklahoma CityJunior Achievement is proud to recognize Yolanda Scott as an outstanding mentor who goes above and beyond in her work as the program manager for Youth Services with the Central Oklahoma Workforce Investment Board and a Junior Achievement volunteer.
“One fine example is the mentor relationship she developed with Nicholas, a student at Emerson High School and member of their Academy of Entrepreneurship,” said Jo Wise, regional director for Junior Achievement. “At the end of a Junior Achievement program, she challenged Nicholas to do something outside of his comfort zone. A few days later this quiet young man volunteered on the spot to speak at a tech conference in Dallas about an idea he had. There were over 1,500 attendees in the audience.”
During the 2017 spring semester, Scott helped Nicholas pursue his dreams by helping him secure an after-school internship at TechJoynt, which gave him invaluable exposure to the world of business, in a company environment that aligned with his passions. Nicholas graduated from Emerson last spring and is now pursuing a degree at Oklahoma City Community College, but Yolanda’s influence did not stop upon graduation. She encouraged Nicholas to join the Advisory Board at the School of Entrepreneurship at Emerson to help inspire their new members.
“Through the confidence Yolanda has instilled in Nicholas, he is not only inspiring students but also inspiring community leaders serving on the board with him,” Wise said.
